COLOSSIANS 2:6-7 – TWO IMPORTANT WORDS

There are two words important to living the Christian Life.

The two words are “in Him”, meaning “in Christ”. In fact, when the Bible says “in Christ” or “in whom”, it is referring to being “in Him”.

Our text this morning is Colossians 2:6-7 (Read)

This three-fold title (“Christ”, “Jesus”, “Lord”) for the Lord Jesus appears only here in Paul’s writings. If we are born-again Christians, we have received Christ Jesus the Lord by faith. Hebrews 11:6

If we walk with Him now, it will be by faith.

Each of Christ’s names has meaning for this faith walk.

Colossians 2:6 – The Name “Christ” means “Anointed One” or “Messiah” and speaks of His Deity.

Colossians 1:15 – Charles Erdman – “‘Firstborn’ here means two things: priority in time and supremacy in place or position. Christ existed before the Creation, but He held the rank commonly assigned to the ‘firstborn’, the rank of eminence and dominion.  Christ is thus declared to be the universal sovereign.” Charles Erdman, The Epistles of Paul to the Colossians and to Philemon, © 1966 by W.L. Jenkins, Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, Page 52

Colossians 1:16-17 – Christ is Creator and Sustainer.

Colossians 2:9 – Christ is God and is to be worshipped as part of the Trinity. Hebrews 13:15, Revelation 4:11-15

TO WALK BY FAITH IN CHRIST IS TO WALK IN WORSHIP

The Name “Jesus” means “Jehovah will save”. This speaks of His Duty. Matthew 1:21, Ephesians 1:7

Obviously, we must trust Christ by faith (Ephesians 2:7-8) and we must be devoted to Him by faith.

1 John 4:10, 18-19, Matthew 10:37, Mark 12:28-30

TO WALK BY FAITH IN JESUS IS TO WALK IN LOVE AND DEVOTION

The name “the Lord” refers to Jesus as Jehovah, as Master. This speaks of His Destiny.  Colossians 2:10, 1:18, Philippians 2:9-11

We can’t claim that Jesus is Lord unless we strive to obey Him. 1 John 2:2-6

TO WALK BY FAITH IN THE LORD IS TO WALK IN OBEDIENCE

Colossians 2:7 – This is how we do it!
