HEBREWS 1:4-14 – THE GREATEST!

There once was a brand-new pastor who came to church. His first sermon was fabulous. But the next 3 weeks, he preached the exact same sermon! So, after church on week 4, the pastor was summoned to a hastily called Deacons Meeting. They demanded an explanation. The pastor calmly replied, “This is lesson #1. When you start practicing it, we’ll go to Lesson #2.

Now I am not going to repeat last week’s sermon, but I am going to repeat the same applications. That is because the Author of Hebrews is still talking about the same topic: Our Superior Lord. Last week we saw:

Jesus Christ is:

IS HEIR OF ALL THINGS.

CREATOR OF ALL THINGS.

THE RADIANCE OF GOD’S GLORY.

THE EXACT REPRESENTATION OF GOD.

HOLDS THE UNIVERSE TOGETHER.

PURGED OUR SINS

SITS AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD.

This week we see that Jesus Christ is the Greatest when compared to Supernatural beings, the angels. There was much angel worship during the time of Christ, and the author is showing, that although angels have special powers, and played key roles in the Old Testament, they are inferior to the Son of God. The author uses several quotes from the Old Testament to prove His point!

Jesus Christ is:

THE GREATEST AS DEITY – Hebrews 1:4-7

  • 4 – As we already said, the Lord Jesus is heir of all things. He has a more excellent name as God, the Son. Philippians 2:9-11
  • 5 – Psalm 2:7, Jesus has existed for all eternity as God. This is not referring to His existence, but when He gained the right to inherit God’s throne and to rule as God. Acts 13:27-33 shows us that this promise was fulfilled at His death, burial, and resurrection (Vs. 33).
  • 5 – The second promise in this verse has to do with a promise made to David about His descendent, the Lord Jesus. 2 Samuel 7:14 in context, 2 Samuel 7:12-17
  • 6 – The angels were to worship the Lord Jesus. “Firstborn” refers to rank or position, not birth order. The angels did worship Him when Jesus was born, but it would not have been the first time. And this reference refers to this quote is from the Septuagint translation into Greek Deuteronomy 32:43. Although the angels are referred to as the Sons of God collectively, no individual angel was ever called God’s Son. Ultimately, this will be fulfilled when Jesus again comes to earth to set up His Kingdom.
  • 7 – Psalm 104:4 This verse does concede that Angels are awesome! They are winds and fire, both formidable. Winds would speak of their awesome power and fire might speak of their brilliance and power. But they are created beings! They are not God.

THE GREATEST IN SOVEREIGNTY – Hebrews 1:8-9

  • These verses are a quote from Psalm 45:6-7
  • Verse 8 also speaks of Jesus’ deity as attested by the Father Himself. But also shows us His righteous, sovereign reign over all things. His throne or sovereign rule is eternal.
  • 9 – Note that the angels perform worship at the Throne of Jesus, but angels are not on the Throne. Isaiah 6:1-3, and John 12:40 attest to this!

Jesus has authority over them! Thus, He is above His “Companions”! And remember, He has sovereign rule over us as well!

THE GREATEST IN ABILITY – Hebrews 1:10-14

  • Verses 10-12 are a quote of Psalm 102:25-27
  • 10 – Jesus has the Power of Creator.
  • Vs, 11 – Jesus has the Power of longevity.
  • 12 – Jesus has the Power to allow the Heaven and Earth to age and pass away and to replace it with New Heavens and a new earth. Revelation 21:1-2

Jesus has the Power of stability. Hebrews 13:8

  • 13 – No angel has ever been told this. It is a fulfillment of Psalm 110:1
  • 14 – The angels are awesome ministers on our behalf. We don’t know all that entails, but we do know this: The power and ability to reign over everything belongs to “The Greatest”, the one who is “King of Kings and Lord of Lords!

Jesus Christ is the Greatest!

THE GREATEST AS DEITY

THE GREATEST IN SOVEREIGNTY

THE GREATEST IN ABILITY

What should be our response?

  • Faith in Him as Savior and Lord.
  • Unending sincere worship.
  • Total submission and obedience.
