Luke 2:1-7 – THANKFUL FOR JESUS

(This is a message prepared as a devotional for a Christmas Carol sing. You may expand it to be a sermon, Bible lesson, or a personal Bible study.)

We have many things to be thankful for this Christmas. We can be thankful for Family, Friends, Food, Freedom, Finances, Fellowship and Fun. But in all our enjoyment of Christmas, let us remember to be thankful for Jesus. It’s His birthday that we celebrate! In Luke 2:1-7 and Luke 2:11 I find reasons to be thankful for and to Jesus this Christmas.

THANKFUL FOR HIS PLACE IN TIME – Luke 2:1-2

  • This was the perfect time for Him to be born to fulfill all prophecies made about him.
  • It was not a moment too soon or too late.

THANKFUL FOR HIS PLACE OF BIRTH – Luke 2:3-5

  • Mary and Joseph were in Nazareth. It took the decree of an emperor to get Mary and Joseph to the right town in which Jesus was to be born.
  • This was in fulfillment of prophecy. Micah 5:2

THANKFUL FOR HIS (HUMAN) PARENTS – Luke 2:1-5

  • Joseph, a righteous, submissive, obedient stepfather. Matthew 1:18-25
  • Mary, a righteous, submissive, obedient tool in God’s hands. Luke 1:30-38

THANKFUL FOR HIS PRESENCE – Luke 2:6-7, Luke 2:11

  • As a child. Luke 2:1-7
  • As Savior, Messiah (King), as Lord (God). Luke 2:11
  • As fulfillment of Isaiah 9:6
