Psalm 5 – PRAYER

We all know that prayer is important. This Psalm teaches us some vital truths about prayer.

PRAYER IS A CHOICE – Vss. 1-3

David is calling on God, seeking His attention. David has made a conscious decision that he will call upon God on a regular basis (Vs. 3). Effective prayer begins with a commitment that we are going to pray consistently.

PRAYER REQUIRES CLEANSING – Vss. 4-6

These verses remind me of the necessity of keeping short accounts with God. God hates evil! Therefore, as I come to pray, I must seek His forgiveness. Psalm 32:5, Matthew 6:12, 1 John 1:9

PRAYER SHOWS CONFIDENCE – Vs. 7

When David came to pray it was through confidence in the mercy or God and in reverence (fear).

When we come to pray we can be confident that God, in His mercy, will hear us. Jeremiah 33:3, 1 John 5:14-15

PRAYER REFLECTS CONCERN – Vss. 8-10

David was concerned that he live righteously in the midst of his enemies (Vs. 8). As we pray we should ask God to guide us that we will live righteously.

PRAYER INSPIRES A CONCERT (OF PRAISE) – Vss. 11-12

As David prayed he was appreciative of God. He expressed it in His prayers. May we not only begin our prayers with praise, but may we conclude our prayers with praise, confident that God has heard us!
