MEET YOUR HOST – HEBREWS 1:1-4

(For Celebration of The Lord’s Table)

I have been to a lot of celebrations, mostly wedding receptions, where I didn’t know the hosts (Parents). One thing that is always courteous to do, is to introduce yourself, and if possible, get to know them at least a little.

The most important celebration we participate in as believers in Jesus Christ is what we call, “The Lord’s Table”. As we just read in Luke 22:19-20, the Lord himself instituted this commemoration in remembrance of Himself. Every time believers gather to celebrate the Lord’s Table; I believe the real host is the Lord Himself. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

As we always say, it is important that we not partake of the bread and the cup at the Lord’s Table in an unworthy manner. 1 Corinthians 11:27

I believe one way to avoid eating in an “unworthy manner” is by remembering some facts about our host at the Table. For that let’s go to Hebrews 1:1-4.

Luke 22:7-20, 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

JESUS IS THE PRESTIGIOUS HOST

  • “… whom he has appointed heir of all things…” Philippians 2:5-11

JESUS IS THE POWERFUL HOST

  • “… through whom also He made the worlds;” Colossians 1:16, Psalm 33:6, 9
  • “and upholding all things by the word of his power…” Colossians 1:17
  • He’ll hold things together for you as well if you trust Him. Proverbs 3:5-6, Philippians 4:6-7

JESUS IS THE PREEMINENT HOST

  • “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person…” Matthew 17:1-2, John 14:8-11
  • “…sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high;” Ephesians 1:19-23

JESUS IS THE PURIFYING HOST

  • “… when he had by himself purged our sins…” 1 Peter 1:18-19

JESUS IS THE PERFECT HOST

  • “having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.” Hebrews 1:5-14, 1 Cor. 11:27 ff.
