COLOSSIANS 3:5-11 – GETTING DRESSED: PUT OFF!

CHRIST SUPREME #11 (COLOSSIANS)

IN CHRIST, THERE’S A NEW PLAN (This point is review.)

  • *What to do: Seek the things above (Vs. 1).
  • How to do it: Set your minds on the things above (Vs. 2). Romans 12:1-2 comes to mind.
  • Why do it: You are a new creation in Christ (Vss. 3-4).

* The outline for verses 1-4 was written by my friend, Brad Eaton.

Vs. 3 – The testimony of Baptism supports that we are a new creation in Christ. Romans 6:1-4, Galatians 2:20

2 Corinthians 5:17 reminds us that we have a new nature in Christ. It is described in Ezekiel 36:25-27.

Have you wondered why sin keeps happening in our lives if we have been transformed by Christ?

The answer is quite simple. Although our spirits, the real us, have been redeemed, our bodies have not yet been redeemed. We have a new nature in an old body that cannot possibly be perfect. Until Jesus returns or takes home to be with him, we are to strive to become more like Jesus. This is a daily process because we love the Lord Jesus. 1 John 3:2-3, 2 Corinthians 5:14-15

In order to seek things above and set our minds on things above we change our “clothes” this begins with dealing with sin daily, so we can put on Christ-like qualities, daily. This we can do through the power of the Holy Spirit at work in us.

IN CHRIST THERE’S A NEW PLAN

IN CHRIST THERE’S A NEW PROCESS

It is hard to put new qualities on top of ongoing sin. I can put on new qualities after I confess and try to forsake known sin in my life. I am to consciously put to death the sins that hinder my growth.

THE SINS OF PASSION – Colossians 3:5-6

  • We “put to death”, as we confess and forsake sin. James 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1, 2 Corinthians 7:10
  • Sexual immorality. – Any form of sexual pervasion. As the Bride of Christ, the most crucial thing is spiritual adultery. This plagued Israel. Ezekiel 16:30-32
  • Uncleanness is impurity, anything that is filthy. It is having my desires in the “gutter or garbage heap” Things that do not agree with Christian priorities.
  • Passion is my flesh or body controlling me, instead of me controlling my body. Sexual things come to mind first, but I also feel that anything I do to gratify my flesh beyond what God allows can be classified as passion. Gluttony and Drunkenness come to mind.
  • Passion refers to the body. Evil desire refers to the mind. What I think about.
  • Covetousness puts my greed for anything in place of my devotion to God. This is idolatry. Exodus 20:17
  • 6 – When God judges nations and people, His wrath will be towards these sins. We, as Christians, should want nothing to do with them.
  • 7 – This is what God saved us from. I should want to indulge in them now.

SINS OF PRIDE – Colossians 3:8-9

Each one of the sins we are to put away is motivated by pride.

  • Anger – Inner rage.
  • Wrath – Outward rage.
  • Malice – Hatred (Caused by unforgiveness.)
  • Blasphemy is slander. Slander is to say things against others so they can look bad. James 4:11-12
  • Filthy language or abusive speech. Language that rebels against God and man.

IN CHRIST THERE’S A NEW PLAN – Colossians 3:1-4

IN CHRIST THERE’S A NEW PROCESS – Colossians 3:5-9

IN CHRIST THERE’S A NEW PERSON – Colossians 3:9-11

Vs. 9 – Remember that new person came to be the moment you trusted Christ as you Savior. You are no longer obligated to serve sin. Romans 6:14, Romans 14:9

Vs. 10 – As a new person in Christ, you have the ability to become more and more like Jesus. Our goal is to become more like our Lord. 1 Peter 3:18

Vs. 11 – In Christ, there is equality. No one is better than another. In Christ it is all about Jesus.

We’ll see more about the new man next time.
