TRAINED FOR UNITY

Ephesians 4:7-12 – KNOWING AND GROWING #13

  • What have you been trained to do? Think broadly!
  • As a Christian, what have you been trained to do?
  • As a Christian, what do you wish you were trained to do?
  • Why is training important?
  • How does training produce the unity stressed in Ephesians 4:1-6?
  • What does Ephesians 4:16 tell us about personal responsibility?

The church is the body of Christ. And as our own bodies need training so does Christ’s body. The body needs to be taught, trained for a unified effort in becoming more like Jesus. Ephesians 4:7-10 tells us of those whom Christ has provided for the church to make it a unified body.

GENEROUS PROVISION – Vs. 7

  • We have saving grace and serving grace in Christ. Ephesians 2:8-10
  • We have unity in diversity. 1 Corinthians 12:4-7, 11
  • Although we all have some of the same responsibilities, God has especially gifted you in one of these areas. Romans 12:3-8
  • Whatever the body needs, God provides gifted people. What is our foremost responsibility?

GRACIOUS PROVIDER – Vss. 8-10

  • Verse 8 is a quote based Psalm 68:18 which describes a king’s victory over his enemies. Here, in this verse, it is used to describe Christ’s victory.
  • “He led captivity captive” – those saved, bringing them into his kingdom. Hebrews 2:14-18
  • “Gave gifts to Men” – First he received the spoils and then distributed them.
  • Philippians 2:5-8 gives insight into verse 9.
  • Philippians 2:9-11 gives insight into verse 10.

GIFTED PEOPLE – Vs. 11

  • Apostles and Prophets were the foundation of the church. The apostles were the official witnesses of the resurrection. Prophets probably spoke under inspiration until the Scriptures were complete. Ephesians 2:19-20, 3:5
  • Evangelists are called the Church’s “obstetricians” by R. Kent Hughes. There are gifted people who have ability to lead people to faith in Christ.
  • Hughes calls the Pastor/Teachers the Church’s “pediatricians”. They are the shepherds of the flock. 1 Peter 5:1-4, 1 Timothy 5:17, Titus 1:5-9

GREAT PURPOSE – Vs. 12

  • To whom does the “work of the ministry” belong? What common mistake do churches make?
  • What does the work of the ministry entail? Matthew 28:18-20, Matthew 5:14-16, Ephesians 2:10, 2 Corinthians 5:18-21, 1 Peter 1:13-25
