1 KINGS 19:15-21 – THE MENTORING SERVANT

- Have you ever mentored someone to do a job that you are doing?
- When is it time for you to become a mentor?
It would soon be time for Elijah to go home to Heaven. He needed a replacement that would be mentored by him and take over after his departure. Elisha was that man.

- God’s choice was Elisha. God should choose mentors and protégés.

THE CURRICULUM OF THE PROTÉGÉ
- Time (Together) – 1 Kings 19:22
- To mentor someone, time must be spent with the individual, not only in formal teaching times, but especially interaction on a personal basis.
- Why are one on one times valuable both to a mentor and a protégé?
- Testimony – 2 Timothy 3:10-11, 1 Timothy 4:12
- Jesus set the example for His disciples to follow. Matthew 10:24-25
- As Elijah’s constant companion, Elisha witnessed key events that instructed him.
These included the events in 1 Kings 21 and 2 Kings 1-2.
- Watching a mentor handle life, and in some cases death, testifies to the reality of his or her faith.
- Teaching – Matthew 5:1-2, Timothy 2:2, 1 Timothy 4:13
- Tasks – Philippians 4:9
- As Elijah’s servant, Elisha would have been assigned things to do.
- Jesus sent His disciples on mission, and they reported back to Him. Mark 6:7-12, 30
Paul constantly assigned Timothy, Titus, and other protégés tasks to be completed. 1 Timothy 1:3, Titus 1:5
