COLOSSIANS 2:8-15 – DON’T BE FOOLED!

CHRIST SUPREME #8 (COLOSSIANS)

They call it “advertising”, but in reality, companies are quietly, or not so quietly trying to manipulate you into buying their product or using their services.

They call it “candidating.” In reality politicians are trying to manipulate you into voting for them.

Many a child has manipulated their parents through anger, tears, or even a hunger strike.

Many a parent has manipulated a child through bribery.

When I first started going to Cairn University in downtown Philadelphia, I would commute by high speed line from New Jersey. I would have to walk a little in the city. One day a lovely young lady stopped me pinned a flower on me and was trying to manipulate me into joining the ”Moonies”, a popular cult at the time. When I told her that I was married and the Moonies were a cult, she took the flower off and moved on!

Religious manipulation is nothing new. It has been around since Satan tried to manipulate Eve. Another word for it is temptation. He still does that today. 1 Peter 5:9

In Paul’s day, false teachers were trying to manipulate Christ-followers into following false teaching or philosophy that presents a wrong view of Christ. Philosophy is a love for or pursuit of wisdom. Any philosophy that demeans Christ or His work, is heresy!

In Colossians 2:8, Paul continues a stern, yet loving, warning to the Colossians who had false teachers trying to manipulate them.

  • The word, “cheat” means to “take captive” or “kidnap”. When Satan manipulates through people, he wants to kidnap our minds away from God’s truth.
  • “empty deception” – There’s nothing to it, but they use tradition to deceive.
  • “Basic principles of the world” – refers to letters of the alphabet. They are simplistic.
  • To truly love Christ is to have a philosophy that says Christ is all I need. I don’t have to add anything to it!
  • When a person is in Christ, he has trusted the Lord Jesus Christ alone for forgiveness and eternal life. He is a new creature, having been born again. Titus 3:4-5, 2 Corinthians 5:17
  • In Vss. 9-15, Paul says, Don’t be fooled! Don’t be manipulated. Here’s what we have in Christ!
  1. WE HAVE THE FULNESS OF GOD Vs. 9
  • To have Jesus is to have God. Jesus is God! Mark 1:1
  • All the attributes that are found in God the Father, and God the Holy Spirit, are found in God the Son.
  • When we allow Christ to fill us and control us through the Holy Spirit, we have all of God, we can hold!
  1. WE ARE COMPLETE IN HIM Vs. 10
  • You have heard of, or even used the word “complete”. We use complete baking mixes say “Just add water.”

And we say, “You make my life complete”.

  • With Christ inside of us, we are complete! Because he is the head of all “principality and power”, we need nothing more now and for all eternity. Ephesians 1:19-23
  1. WE ARE CIRCUMCISED Vs. 11
  • Circumcision was a sign of God’s covenant with Abraham. There was a cutting of a piece of skin on the male that signified a separation. Abraham was separated to God.
  • We need not use literal circumcision today. We have a separation from the sins of the flesh. We are forgiven and no longer obligated to serve sin.
  1. WE ARE BAPTIZED Vs. 12
  • Believer’s Baptism is an outward testimony of what God has already done in our hearts through the work of the Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 12:13
  • Believer’s Baptism is our testimony of what has happened to us. Romans 6:3-4
  1. WE ARE ALIVE Vs. 13
  • We spiritually alive now and will be spiritually and physically alive for all eternity!
  1. WE ARE FORGIVEN Vss. 13-14
  • All trespasses forgiven!
  • The charges against us which were real and accurate were nailed to Jesus’ cross. That’s as if to say, They are paid and you are pardoned!
  • The charges against you have been dropped. They were nailed to the cross, where Jesus died for them!
  1. We ARE VICTORIOUS Vs. 15
  • Like a Roman General who is leading a victory march over a defeated enemy, Christ has won the victory over the enemy and set us free!
