Deuteronomy 7:1-11 – BEGINNING A NEW LIFE
The children of Israel were going into the Promised Land. God had set them free from Egypt, and after 40 years of wandering in the wilderness they would begin a new life in a new land. As Christians, we have left the bondage of sin, and shouldn’t wander, but settle into a new life in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). The instructions Israel was given for new life in the land also apply to us concerning our new lives in Christ.
REMOVAL OF THE OLD – Vss. 1-5
Because of the bad influence the people of the land and their idols were to be destroyed.
We should remove all things in our lives that are not pleasing to Christ! Of course, we are talking about killing anyone, but to get away from detrimental influences.
REASONS FOR THE NEW – Vss. 6-8
We should act in a new way because:
- We are a holy people. Vs. 6, 1 Peter 2:9
- The Lord loves us. Vss. 7-8a, John 3:16
- The Lord has delivered us. Vs. 8b Ephesians 2:1
- The Lord has redeemed us. Vs. 8b, 1 Peter 1:18-19
REPAYMENT FOR BEHAVIOR – Vss. 9-10
The Lord rewards us according to our behavior.
REMINDER TO OBEY – Vs. 11
