LUKE 3:1-18 – ANNOUNCING THE KING

UNIQUELY LUKE

Whenever there is a big event, much planning is done, and often people go in advance to get people ready for the arrival of a great dignitary, king, president, or Prime Minister.

When Jesus came, John the Baptist announced that the king was coming, Israel’s Messiah.

As Christians, Jesus our Savior has come, and belief in Him gives eternal life.

John got people ready to receive their King. We get people ready by leading them to faith in Christ.

CONDITIONS OF THE DAY – Luke 3:1-2

  • Luke not only tells us the time of John’s arrival but indicates that spiritual conditions were terrible. The Jews were under bondage to Rome and their immediate leaders were puppets to Rome and vile men. The priesthood was also corrupt. There was much outward religion but little inward reality. The society we live in today is as corrupt the conditions in the first century.
  • It is when times were at their worst, and Jesus was soon to “go public”, that the word of the Lord came to John the Baptist.

CHALLENGE TO THE PEOPLE – Luke 3:3-9

  • Purposeful Vs. 3

Repentance, ready for the coming Messiah.

Jesus has come! We are to repent and believe the Gospel!

1 Thessalonians 1:5-10, Romans 10:9-13

  • Prophetic Vss. 4-6, Isaiah 40:3-5

John’s ministry was predicted. Our ministry of sharing the Gospel was mandated by our Lord Jesus. Matthew 28:18-20

  • Practical – Luke 3:7-10

John called for inner repentance, not just outward appearance.

CLARIFICATION ON REPENTANCE – Luke 3:10-14

  • Generosity
  • Honesty
  • Integrity

COMING CHAMPION – Luke 3:15-18

John the Baptist lived to advance the name of His Lord Jesus Christ. May we do the same! Titus 2:11-15
