(Here is an outline for you to develop as a sermon or a Bible lesson. Although the points are alliterated [words beginning with same letter], you may use different words that mean the same thing.)

Hezekiah was a Godly King, already very experienced in crying out to God for help (Isaiah 37). When he faced an early death due to disease he cried out to God.

A FATAL PREDICTION – Isaiah 38:1 – Through the Prophet Isaiah, Hezekiah was told that he was about to die.

A FEARFUL PRAYER – Isaiah 38:2-3 – This was a prayer of desperation. When we are desperate, God listens. He will answer prayers. Sometimes He will remove the problem, and other times, He will give us grace to go through the problem, so our perseverance will help mature us. James 1:2-4, 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

A FAITHFUL PROMISE AND PROOF – Isaiah 38:4-8 – God promised Hezekiah 15 more years of life and gave him a “sign” or proof that He would do as He promised. The shadow cast by a big sundial that usually moved forward, went backward 10 degrees. This means that time moved backwards!

A FERVENT PROCLAMATION (Testimony) – Isaiah 38:9-20

  • His Grief – Vss. 9-15
  • His Confidence – Vss. 16-17
  • His Praise – Vss. 18-20

A FULFILLED PROMISE – Isaiah 38: 21-22 – A lump of figs was used to heal Hezekiah’s boil.
