SACRIFICIALLY HIS!

(A Complete Lesson)

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer  up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:5

·        What are some the sacrifices that you and/or your family members made during WWII?

·        What sacrifices has your wife made for you or you for your wife? What sacrifices are made for the kids?

·        When do we not mind making sacrifices?

·        Why should we be willing to make sacrifices for our Lord Jesus Christ?

·        1 Peter 2:5 tells us that we are a “holy priesthood”? To you, what does it mean to be a priest as a Christian?

·        Why is it a privilege that God would consider each of us to be priests?

·        Why is it scary to think that God would consider each of us to be priests?

Traditionally priests offer sacrifices.  We as Christians are also to offer sacrifices.  According to John MacArthur Jr. there are seven “spiritual sacrifices” that Christians are to make as priests.

THE SACRIFICE OF SELF

Romans 12:1-2 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. [2] And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

·        According to Romans 11:33-36, why would we want to make such a sacrifice?

·        What other reasons can you think of for sacrificing ourselves?

·        In what ways is being a living sacrifice more difficult than being a dying one?

·        On a daily basis, how do you think we can go about being a living sacrifice?

·        Two good things to ask ourselves are, “Is what I am doing set apart for God (holy)?  And, “Is what I am doing acceptable unto God.?”

·        How will being transformed by the renewing of our minds help us to be living sacrifices?

·        How do we have our minds renewed?

THE SACRIFICE OF SONG

Hebrews 13:15 - By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

1 Thessalonians 5:16 - Rejoice evermore.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 - In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

·        Why is the concept of praise foreign to most men?

·        What does it mean to offer continual praise?

·        What do we do when it is hard to give thanks?

·        Why is the offering of praise a sacrifice?

THE SACRIFICE OF SERVICE

Hebrews 13:16 - But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

Matthew 5:16 - Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Titus 2:14 - Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

·        Let’s see how many things that we can list that God would probably consider good works.

·        What are some of the good works we might be doing for those in and outside of the church that we are not doing now?

·        Are there any good works that we might do for our missionaries that we are not doing now?

·        How are our good works beneficial for unsaved people?

·         What hinders us from being “zealous of good works”?

THE SACRIFICE OF STUFF

Hebrews 13:16 - But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

·        To communicate is to share.  What are some of the things that we might own, besides money, that we can share with others?

·        With so many people in need and so many organizations making appeals, how do we know when to share our money with others?

·        Look at Philippians 4:14-19. What lessons about sharing are found there?

·        What does 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 teach us about giving?

·        Why are Christians sometimes hesitant to give?

THE SACRIFICE OF SOULS

Romans 15:15-16 – Nevertheless, brethren, I have written the more boldly unto you in some sort, as putting you in mind, because of the grace that is given to me of God, [16] That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.

·        Paul viewed those he won to Christ as a sacrifice to God. Why?

·        In what ways are our efforts in soul winning a sacrifice?

·        Why should we be willing to make these sacrifices?

THE SACRIFICE OF SWEETNESS

John 13:34-35 - A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. [35] By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Romans 12:10 - Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

·        Why would God consider loving other believers a sacrifice?

·        Why does loving other Christians often take work?

·        What makes loving other believers worth it?

THE SACRIFICE OF SUPPLICATIONS

1 Timothy 2:1-2 - I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; [2] For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

1 Timothy 2:8 - I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

James 5:16 - Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

·        Why is prayer a sacrifice for the one who prays?

·        Why is sacrificial prayer pleasing to God?

·        Why should we be willing to make the sacrifices necessary to pray?

Revelation 8:3-4 - And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. [4] And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.
