ROMANS 4

Romans 4:1-9

WHEN GOD IS REAL

There are many people who know nothing of peace of heart, forgiveness for sin, relief from guilt, and power to live a new life. They have never discovered that God is real.

God is not a myth, figment of imagination, powerless, unloving, or

uncaring. Our God gives peace, forgiveness, and relief from guilt.

Romans 4:1-9 tells us what happens when God becomes real to a lost sinner.

GOD IS BELIEVED - Vss. 1-3a - "Abraham believed God..."

RIGHTEOUSNESS IS BESTOWED - Vss. 3b-5 - "...and it was

accounted unto him for righteousness."

WE ARE BLESSED - Vss. 6-8 - "...Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven..."

See Genesis 15:1-6

THE TROUBLE WITH WORKS – Vs. 4

If one works to get to Heaven he is trying to place God in his debt.

THE TRIUMPH OF BELIEF – Vss. 5-8

David tells us of the blessing of faith apart from works.

THE TIMING OF FAITH – Vss. 9-12

LEARNING FROM ABRAHAM!

We can learn much from Bible characters. See Romans 15:4

From David we can learn to trust God explicitly when facing the "giants" in our lives.

From Daniel we can learn to be faithful.

From Mary, Martha's sister, we can learn to be devoted.

From Peter we can learn to put our mind in gear before speaking.

In this passage we can learn at least 3 lessons from Abraham.

1. BE CONSISTENT - He staggered not at the promise of God through

                                     unbelief.

2. BE COURAGEOUS -  But was strong in faith, giving glory to God.

3. BE CONVINCED  - And being fully persuaded that, what he had

promised, he was able also to perform.

Note: The promises to Abraham are found in Genesis 12, 15, 17, 18 etc.
