WHY PROVERBS?

As part of my devotional reading of God's Word, I try to read Proverbs once every six months. Why does God want us to pay attention to the Book of Proverbs? He tells us in the first six verses of the Book.

HE WANTS US TO TAKE ACTION Vss. 1-4

To know Vs. 2

To perceive Vs. 2

To receive Vs. 3

To give Vs. 4

HE WANTS US TO ATTAIN Vs. 5

A wise man will hear, increase learning and attain wise counsel.

HE WANTS US TO APPLY Vs. 6

When we understand a proverb and its interpretation, we will apply its truths to lives. We aren't just to read God's Word, we are to live it!

MY DESIRE

MAY I BE:

A KNOWING MAN - Proverbs 1:2 - To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

A LEARNING MAN - Proverbs 1:3 - To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

A GROWING MAN - Proverbs 1:4-5 - To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. [5] A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

AN UNDERSTANDING MAN - Proverbs 1:6 - To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

A FEARING MAN - Proverbs 1:7 - The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

"The fear of the Lord" is a familiar phrase in Proverbs.  Here are some things we should know about the fear of the Lord.

IT IS THE BEGINNING OF KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM - 1:7, 9:10

IT RESULTS IN HATRED FOR EVIL - 8:13

IT PROLONGS LIFE - 10:27

IT PRODUCES CONFIDENCE - 14:26

IT ENCOURAGES GODLY LIVING - 16:6

IT LEADS TO ETERNAL LIFE - 19:23 (As we fear God and His judgment, we will turn to Christ for help.)
