REVELATION 3

4 Outlines

Revelation 3:1-6

WHEN GOD'S WORD HITS HOME

There will be times when the preaching of God's Word will bring conviction. The message that Jesus gave to the church of Sardis gives us some ideas of what to do when we are convicted.

BE APPALLED - Vs. 1

The people at Sardis should have been shocked, sorrowful and concerned that they were a dead church.

We should be shocked, sorrowful and concerned when God's Word exposes our sins.

BE ACTIVE - Vss. 2-3

We need to actively repent of sin.

BE ASSURED - Vss. 4-5

The Lord Jesus promises blessings for those who overcome.

BE ATTENTIVE - Vs. 6

When God's Word is being presented, we need to hear and respond accordingly.

Revelation 3:7-13

THE CHURCH WITH THE OPEN DOOR

There have been times in my ministry when I had an "open door".

Someone was ready to receive Christ, and I was able to quickly lead that person to Him.

My friend Peggy is an example of that. Her husband had died, and she knew she needed the Savior. In a matter of moments, the transaction was completed.

We not only receive open doors for soul winning, but for other types of ministry as well. Sometimes the opportunities are just there to take advantage of. While pastoring in New York, I had an open door into cable television on the local public access station for five years. (Use your own illustrations of open doors you've had.)

It is a real blessing when our Lord Jesus gives us open doors of opportunity. The church in Philadelphia was told "I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it." (Vs. 8)

CHARACTER OF CHRIST - Vs. 7

The success of this church is based on the character of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is in charge.

He is holy.

He is true.

He has the key of David. This is a reference to Eliakim, who was evidently steward to King Hezekiah's house. He had access to, and was responsible for all the king's wealth. Isaiah 22:20-22

Spiritually speaking, our Lord Jesus has access and the key to the King's riches. He opens and closes as he pleases. He is responsible for all blessings. What he opens no man can close.

What He closes, no man can open.

COMPLIMENTS TO THE CHURCH Vs. 8

They had a little power, and evidently used it.

They kept His word.

They did not deny His name.

As a result, the Lord gave them an "open door".

CONFRONTATION WITH THE ENEMY Vs. 9

False Jews, those who did not believe on Messiah were persecuting the church.

The Lord would defeat them. Philippians 2:9-11

COMFORT FOR THE FUTURE Vs. 10

I personally think that the "hour of temptation" or testing is the Great Tribulation.

The church will be taken out before it happens by way of the rapture.

CHALLENGE TO PERSEVERE Vss. 11-13

Revelation 3:7-13

LOVE LETTER

In Revelation 2 & 3 our Lord Jesus Christ gives messages to 7 churches in Asia. Each message is to a certain type of church. The church in Philadelphia was a church that was being faithful to her Lord. This is a love letter from the Lord Jesus to this church.

ATTRIBUTES OF THE LORD - Vs. 7

ACTIONS FOR THE LORD - Vs. 8

ASSURANCE FROM THE LORD - Vss. 9,10,12

ADVICE BY THE LORD - Vss. 11, 13

Revelation 3:14-21

THE LUKEWARM CHURCH, OR TEPID IN A TEACUP! :-)

The last of the seven churches addressed by our Lord Jesus seems to be very prevalent in our world today. This is the lukewarm church of Laodecia. Drinks that are lukewarm are rarely pleasant. I never offer someone a nice "luke" cup of coffee. The lukewarm church is not pleasant to our Lord.
