REVELATION 2

CHURCH SAMPLER – Part 1

Revelation 1:19 - Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;

·       The simple outline of the Book of Revelation is found in Verse 19.  We have already looked at the things which John saw in chapter 1.  Now in chapters 2-3 we will see the “things that are.”  Beginning in chapter 4 we will see the things “which shall be hereafter”.

·       The glorified Lord Jesus Christ had a message for the 7 churches in Asia (Turkey) to whom John was writing.  He gave His assessment of how they were doing and His advice.

·       Although those churches are long gone, these types of churches still exist today throughout the world.  The Lord is still examining His church and still finding the same joys and disappointments that he found in the first century.

·       Remember, churches are made up of people.  There are people in the churches who display these characteristics as well as the churches themselves.

·       Due to the nature of our study, which will stress the part of Revelation that deals with the future, we are simply giving an overview of this section.

Revelation 2:1-7 - THE SUBTLY FLAWED CHURCH

The Church of Ephesus was a wonderful church!  It did so many things right, but it had one subtle flaw!  It had left its first-love relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

THE LORD’S PRESENCE – Vs. 1 – Whatever we do or say the Lord is here!

THE LORD’S PERCEPTION – Vss. 2-4, 6 – He says to each church, “I know thy works!”

·       In spite of their many good qualities, the Ephesians had “left their first love”.  It is like a marriage where the couple is simply “going through the motions”. The love is gone!

·       Let us remember that God wants our love more than anything else!

THE LORD’S PRESCRIPTION – Vs. 5

·       Those who left their first love are to remember and repent or else there will be a removal of their testimony!

THE LORD’S PROMISE – Vs. 7 – “Overcomers” have a glorious future! Rev. 22:1-2

Revelation 2:8-11 – THE SUFFERING CHURCH

The Church in Smyrna was being persecuted, but was faithful to the Lord.  Here is the Lord Jesus’ concise, encouraging message to this church:

I AM ALIVE! – Vs. 8 – In the midst of persecution, the reality of the resurrected Lord is

                                         an important truth to remember!

I AM AWARE! – Vs. 9 – A real “Jew” is one who has faith. Galatians 3:7,9

I WILL AWARD! – Vss. 10-11 – The “Crown of Life” is promised to them that “endure

temptation.”  This indicates their love for the Lord Jesus. James 1:12

Revelation 2:12-17 – THE INFILTRATED CHURCH

The church at Pergamos had been infiltrated with false teachers who taught worldliness.

THE CHURCH ADDRESSED – Vs. 12 – The Lord speaks as the God of Judgment.

THE CHURCH ASSESSED – Vss. 13-15 – Their faithfulness was commended, but they

had allowed two groups of false teachers to infiltrate them.

·       Balaam was a false prophet who seduced the Israelites into participating in sexual immorality and idolatry. Numbers 25, 31:16

·       The Nicolaitanes were another group who encouraged a worldly lifestyle, participating in the sinful indulgences of non-Christians.

THE CHURCH ADVISED – Vs. 16 – Very simply, they were to repent or be judged!

THE CHURCH AWARDED – Vs. 17 – Overcomers have a special relationship with

                                                                    Christ!

Revelation 2:18-29 – THE BROADMINDED CHURCH

In many ways it is good to be broadminded, but there is a time when being broadminded is wrong.  In their broadmindedness the Church in Thyatira was tolerating gross sin!

TOIL APPROVED – Vss. 18-19 – This was an active church with increasing deeds.

TOLERANCE CONDEMNED – Vs. 20 – A false prophetess who was leading Christians

                                                         astray was being tolerated.

TRIBULATION PROMISED – Vss. 21-23 – The Lord Jesus would judge this woman and

                                                        her followers.

TENACITY ENCOURAGED – Vss. 24-25 – Those not involved are encouraged to remain

                                                        faithful.

TRIUMPH ASSURED – Vss. 26-29 – Overcomers will reign with Christ, and have Christ

himself, who is the “Morning Star”. Revelation 22:16

Revelation 2:1-5

FIRST LOVE!

In a physical sense every married person is to have a first love!  That first love is to be the husband or wife that God has provided. Ephesians 5:25, Titus 2:4

There are problems when a marriage partner develops another "love" that takes the place of the original partner. Sometimes that "love" is another person, sometimes that "love" is wealth, fame, alcohol, drugs, or something else.  In "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge had a girlfriend who loved him very much. However she broke off the engagement because he had a greater love for money than he did for her.

It is also possible to leave a first love in a Spiritual sense. This is what the church in Ephesus did to our Lord Jesus Christ.  We must be careful because we can leave our love for the Lord Jesus just as easily.

INTRODUCTION

Our Lord is giving this message to the "Angel" of the church in Ephesus. I personally feel that He is referring to the pastor. The "stars" refer to the angels or pastors for the churches mentioned in Revelation 2-3 (Revelation 1:20). It is encouraging to me that He holds each pastor in His hand.

Also he walks among the candlesticks which refers to the churches (Revelation 1:20).

COMMENDATION - Vss. 2,3,6

Vs. 2 - Our Lord knows the work of each church. This church was a hard working, diligent church. They hated the activities of evil workers and false apostles.

Vs. 3 - Life wasn't easy for the Ephesian Christians, but the people labored faithfully during times of opposition and they did not faint!

Vs. 6 - There was a group of false teachers called the Nicolaitans whose deeds the Lord hated. The Ephesians hated these deeds as well.

CONDEMNATION - Vs. 4

They had left their first love!  They were still busy, but no longer loved the Lord the way they once did.

Do you know what a person is called who cheats on his wife?  He is called an adulterer. Our Lord hates spiritual adultery! James 4:4

How about us? Do we love anything or anyone more than we love Christ? Luke 14:26-27

COUNSEL - Vs. 5

They were to remember from where they had fallen.

They were to repent.

They were to go back to doing their first works.

They were to beware lest their candlestick (testimony) be removed.

CHALLENGE - Vs. 7

We are to hear what our Lord is saying.

If we heed, there is reward!

Revelation 2:1-5

THE CHURCH WITH A SUBTLE PROBLEM

Walk into some churches and it's not hard to pick out problems which the church is experiencing.  In other churches, however, the problems are not as obvious.  Some churches have subtle problems, which do not appear upon casual observation.  The church in Ephesus, addressed by the Lord Jesus in this passage, was such a church.  (You might want to point out that if the church has a problem, the people have a problem.  The church is a reflection of the people in it, because people are the church.)

A GREAT PROGRAM Vss. 1-3

A GREAT PROBLEM Vs. 4

A GREAT PLAN Vs. 5

  REMEMBER

  REPENT

  REPEAT ("...do the first works;")

OR REMOVAL (The candlestick represents the testimony of the church.

testimony of the church that does not make things right will eventually

     taken away.)
